Fix Car Dents

Types of dents which occur in car body panels are many different. Although the cause and type of dent vary in what they all have in common is that they alter the structure of the metal. The tiny grains that make up the metal move out of there natural position as it becomes stretched. When the metal is dented (mild steel or metal alloy) the number of grains remain the same but they move apart or closer together and cannot flow back to there original position. There are different methods to fix car dents. The Dent Shop  (469) 233-5880

Small Dents

Small dents can at times be much more difficult to remove than much larger dents due to the fact they tend to be in a strong area of a panel ( near the edge or near a body line ) and tend to be very sharp dents. A sharp dent occurs because in a strong area of a panel the metal is tight and strong requiring more energy to dent it so rather than a big smooth area deforming a small tight sharp dent is the common result. The Dent Shop  (469) 233-5880

How to fix minor dents and dings on your car

Over the years, no matter how careful you are, your car is going to collect minor parking lot dents and shopping cart dings. If you have ever had to pay a body shop to fix car dents, you know the bill is quite significant. But if you are handy, there is no reason you can’t improve the looks of your dinged up car yourself with simple tools and elbow grease.

The temptation may be to just spread body filler to fix car dents and dings, but that is seldom the right way to do it. Body filler is only meant to be used to fill and smooth the are after the metal is as close to normal as possible. If you have areas of filler 1/4 inch thick, you are doing it wrong. These minor dings may not hurt your car too bad, but they can hurt your wallet. It’s a frustrating and often costly experience returning to your car to find it’s been damaged and the culprit’s done a runner. The Dent Shop  (469) 233-5880

Flexible Bumper Covers

Did you know that many minor dents in plastic bumper covers can be easily removed without damaging the paint (any more than it already is)? Because they are made of a flexible synthetic, bumper covers don’t usually permanently deform the way steel or aluminum sheet metal do.

All you really need to fix car dents is an electric heat gun and some patience. Like most things, when you heat plastic, it softens and expands. Apply heat to the dent and the area around it, and it actually might just pop out all by itself, but if it doesn’t all you have to do is reach behind with a tool or while wearing a glove, and push it out.

The plastic has a memory of its original shape and will pop back into place if given some encouragement.

Since the heat needed isn’t that high, and the paint also remains flexible, if you are careful you can do it without cracking the paint or causing it to bubble up. The Dent Shop  (469) 233-5880

Large Dents

Large dents can be as big as the panel its self-being restricted only by the edge of panels of defined body lines. Large dents tend to be less metal deformation for the center of the dent but can have severe creased edges or crowns/eyebrows as they are known in the car body repair trade. Resort to a Dent Puller for a Big Damage

If the dent is ugly, buy this tool from a local hardware shop. However, it will require you to drill a tiny hole into the dent. So, don’t use this gadget if you are a total amateur.

You have to insert the puller wire into the hole and then pull the depressed part back to the surface level. Finish the job by filling up the hole and then sanding and painting.

The tricks mentioned above show that you don’t need to be an expert to fix car dents and scratches. Nevertheless, don’t try at home if it’s a deep graze or a massive cut because you may ruin the curb appeal in that case. The Dent Shop  (469) 233-5880
