Hail Repair
All vehicles requiring hail repair will need to be assessed beforehand by the Dent Shop associate for time and cost estimates. These assessments can take up to one hour and are provided free of charge.
Hail Damage affects mostly the horizontal panels on a vehicle: the hood, the roof, the trunk, the tops of the front fenders, and the tops of the rear quarter panels. The size and depth of the dents are determined by the size of the hailstone. If the storm includes strong blowing winds, the side of the vehicle facing the wind will also be hail damaged and require hail repair. The Dent Shop (469) 233-5880
Assess the Damage
The first step to any hail repair process is to assess the damage. Where is the dent? How big is the dent? How do we get to the dent? After assessing the damage, and determining if it can be effectively removed through PDR (as 80-90% of all dents are), we prepare the area around the dent for the repair. The Dent Shop (469) 233-5880
WHAT IS PDR?
Most hail damage is repaired through a process known as “Paintless Dent Repair” (PDR). This is a unique process by which minor dings and dents are removed using highly specialized craftsmanship; each dent is carefully massaged outwards from the back or underside of the damaged panel.
Before paintless dent repair, auto hail repair was mostly performed by traditional auto body repair methods. Dent repair involved drilling, sanding, fillers, and repainting. It was really quite the process and very expensive. In addition, replacing the original paint of your car can decrease the resale value. Hail damaged vehicles would spend many days, sometimes weeks in the shop getting repaired. For those unfortunate vehicle owners with severe and all-over hail damage, the traditional auto body shop method was not even an option. The vehicle would be considered totaled. In a few cases, PDR won’t work:
- If the dings are too deep or in certain positions on metal body panels, the metal might have been compromised. In that case, we might tell you that we can’t use PDR and must suggest another solution. For example, we might rarely have to replace and repaint a panel because of excessive damage.
- If large hailstorms did compromise your car’s finish, we might also offer a touch-up or conventional paint job. Our paint techs are experts at matching factory or custom paint jobs, so your car will still look new and shiny when we finish. The Dent Shop(469) 233-5880
